Perigee Moon

The moon will be at perigee — the closest point to earth in its elliptical orbit of the Earth — tonight.

Last night, the high cirrus clouds passing in front of the Moon created a spectacular rainbow-like halo around it. This optical phenomenon was due to the prismatic effect on the moonlight by tiny ice crystals in the clouds. I just wish I had my camera available to shoot it. Will try tonight!
